Falling in love with a job you havent even been interviewed for is a sure way to be let down. Dont get too excited even after youve gone through the interview process and are awaiting an offer. Keeping a cool head about this will do you well, especially when you get to the stage where you negotiate your salary. 3) Ask for feedback If you went to the interview, but got rejected, instead of feeling discouraged, treat it as an opportunity to better yourself as a candidate. If you received a letter from the recruiter saying thanks for your time, feel free to reply with questions about your candidacy. Start by thanking them for considering your candidacy. Then, ask for feedback. Its important not to come off as whiny, entitled or combative, so phrase your question well. Generally, you wont get a reply, since providing feedback puts the recruiter in an awkward position, ethically and legally. But sometimes youll get good advice that you can use. Besides asking for feedback, Susan P. Ask them to keep you in mind for the “next time” they have a job opening and to stay in touch. On the Fringe

On the Fringe There are two groups of people who are struggling to find employment in the workplace. Gen Y (recent college graduates) and Boomers (soon to be retired). These groups are on the fringe of the game. Gen Y, green, with little to no experience, lack an understanding of whats really going on in the world of work. Boomers, if they were honest, have been coasting towards retirement and are not as engaged in their work as they once may have been. I believe in survival of the fittest. In order to stay competitive and innovative, I dont think any business should be forced to hire less than fully capable employees. However, I also believe that we must do more to recognize and value the unique qualities of these two sets of unemployed by including their unique abilities into our workforce.   We need the morals, values and wisdom that comes from the Boomers.   We also need the technical savvy and quick thinking of Gen Y.   These groups of people need to learn survival skills.   They can learn from each other! Inter-Generational Mentoring By partnering new graduates with the almost-retired we create the opportunity for them to learn from each other and build greater respect for their differences and capabilities.   It engages the older worker and enlightens the new worker. These mentoring relationships can be facilitated by high schools, colleges and universities.   They can also be fostered by networking groups and professional associations. We shouldnt and cant leave these groups out of the game. We must bring them up to speed on what is happening in the world of work today. I dont think we cant afford to pay unemployment, medicare and social security like we have in the past.   We need everyone to step up and make a commitment to do whats right. Lets not leave anyone out of the workforce who doesnt want to be left out. The Resume Objective is Dead, So Why Are You Still Using It When I began as a recruiter, long, long ago, every resume began with an objective was followed by a flowery and slightly vague statement about what the jobseeker wanted, written in terms that were all about the candidate. Back then, a typical resume objective would be something meaningless like: Objective: A challenging position in a fast-paced company where I can use my current skills and learn new ones, with opportunity for promotion and growth. Bleh. In retrospect, its easy to see why this approach died, because its all about the candidate, all about me, me, me, and never about what the company was looking for. When the job market got more competitive, we started to catch on and realize that companies dont hire you because of what you want. In fact, companies really dont even care that much about what you want, and they sure dont want to worry about it when theyre screening resumes. Companies hire you because  you  are what  they  want. Today, even though some people still use this kind of meaningless resume objective, the powerful way to start your resume is with a positioning statement and summary that tells the company what you do, and what you can do for them, in terms that they can instantly understand. Look at it from a recruiter or hiring managers perspective. We have a position we need to fill, and we want to find someone who is experienced, and hopefully a specialist at that job. The closer you are to our idea of a perfect candidate, the more we want to talk to you. So instead of saying what you want, show that you are what the company wants, and you need to say it right from the beginning. Lets say, for instance, that Im looking for a confident marketing manager who has online experience to work for a company that sells consumer products. Included in the posting is that were looking for someone who understands the latest in social networking, and who has experience managing complicated projects. Resumes begin to pour in, and the work of selecting which candidates make it to the interview phase begins. Recruiters will give your resume only about 15 or 20 seconds of attention, so you need to grab them from the very first to get their attention, and that works best with a positioning statement. Whats the difference between and objective and a positioning statement or summary? Lets take a look at a sample resume objective, and a sample positioning statement. Which one of these resumes do you think will go to the top of the stack? Candidate A: Seeking a challenging role as a marketing manager with a fast-growing company that will let me build on my experience in online marketing and expand my responsibilities into social network marketing and project management. Candidate B: Innovative Online Marketing Manager Consumer Products, Social Network Marketing, Campaign Management, and Project Management Experience Both of these resumes will make it through the computer system that is just looking for important keywords, but once I review them, Candidate B is going to the top of the stack, because theyve told me what they are, and what they can do, and its a match with what Im looking for. Candidate As resume will be read, because the right words are there, but they probably wont get the interview, because they have set a tone that they are looking for whats in it for them, not whats in it for the company. Lets look at another example for a position for an administrative assistant position working for the head of manufacturing for a company that makes consumer electronics products. Candidate A: Seeking an administrative or assistant position where my twenty years of office experience can be utilized. Candidate B: Flexible and Confident Administrative Assistant with Experience Supporting Senior Management in Top-Tier Manufacturing and Consumer Electronics Companies Again, Candidate B has the edge, because they talk about who what they do and what they bring, rather than what they want. Does this mean that the rest of the resume isnt read? No. The recruiter will spend a few seconds to scan down to see what kinds of skills you list, and to evaluate where youve worked, for how long, and what you did there, and you still have a chance. But in both of these examples, Candidate B caught our attention by positioning themselves as exactly what were looking for by using a strong positioning statement or summary, so were already feeling good about them. So instead of wasting precious top-billing space on your resume with an old-fashioned objective that talks about you, tell us what you do and follow it up with a summary that shows you know what youre talking about.
